Catholics and Jews, an article reviewing persecution of Jews over the centuries

This is a newly published article by Filip Mazurczak on the long (2,000 years now) relationship between Catholics and Jews, although it focuses primarily on the 20th century.

Here is an interesting excerpt the facts of which you might never have heard:
"Perhaps the most surprising Catholic who aided the Jews was General Francisco Franco. This right-wing military dictator, aided by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939, likely saved more Jews than any other political leader during World War II. The devoutly Catholic Spanish dictator refused to hand over Jews who had sought refuge in neutral Spain. Franco instructed Spanish diplomats in Nazi-occupied Europe to aid Jews. He also helped Jews obtain Spanish passports and flee to Latin America. In total, General Franco is credited with saving about 40,000 Jews."

Mazurczak discusses some rabidly antisemitic Catholics in Eastern/Central Europe during World War II, as well as many who tried their best to save Jews. As I currently reside in the Magyarország, his review of Hungary's World War II history is especially important to me.

Mazurczak also mentions that Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill did (apparently) remotely to to aid Jews, in any way. An important point to make.

When possible, I'll try to review (to some extent) the underlying theological issues involved (or one might just say, read St. Paul), but here I'll just note Mazurczak mentions the SSPX (Society of St Pius X). writes:
"In conclusion, the historic relationship between Catholics and Jews has often been fraught. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of recent popes, anti-Judaism is marginalized within the Catholic Church. It is quite telling that the most anti-Semitic faction within the Church today is a schismatic one, the Society of St. Pius X started by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre."

I'm sure SSPXers can write a defense of the archbishop.

In any event, for its size, it is a pretty thorough article and well worth the read, if you have an interest in this subject.

Can we talk a little about Jewish anti-Catholicism?

  2. Sure, we can always talk. :D

God works through a particular pattern, and He works through people. It is important to understand that the "Judaizers" were a pretty major problem for the Early Church (pre-70 AD at least). The essential problem for them was that they didn't want non-Jewish Christians to "get in easy" whereas they had to grow up being Jews and keeping the Law. More importantly, the Christian essential teaching was that one was grafted on to the True Vine via the Holy Eucharist, and thus were then direct descendants of Abraham. No Jew liked that then (many of them Christians) and no Jew will tolerate it now.

This is the core problem between Christians (orthodox Eastern and Western ones) with the Jews. As Catholicism has promoted this teaching so strongly (in the past, not since Vat2, of course; today it takes an act of faith to believe the Church teaches Traditional Christianity at all!) the Church was a most certain target. But of course, things being what they are (if you have three Jews, you have four opinions!) the Jews themselves are all over the place theologically, and most of them themselves are too busy with their own insoluble problems to be interested in any vendetta against the Church -- unlike, I hasten to add, the Freemasons, who represent a secularizing philosophy entirely, one that has promoted abortion and so on, for quite a while now.
