Tales of Two Important Ecclesiastical Sites

Here's a tale of two important ecclesiastical sites, contrasting sites, that is. Stupendously contrasting.

Reflections on Mont Saint-Michel, by Bishop Robert Barron*:

And the incredible, crappy Modernist-style (cement, plain cement walls galore, upside-down boat-shaped new cathedral in Oakland, California (I mean, does modern church architecture have to look crappy?). Unfortunately, after a titanic (pun intended) cost, the building is actually crappy, as in jerry-built and falling apart! So much so the diocese is suing the architects and builders.

Compare that to any medieval cathedral or the buildings on Mont Saint-Michel.

There's a lesson here. Hmmmm.

*Bishop Barron is a Magisterium Catholic clergyman who tends toward the Progressive side of the Church (t'is said he suggests that while Hell exists, it might very well be empty, etc.). But in this article, the good auxiliary bishop has some reflections on Mont Saint-Michel, that so unique place. Very much worth a read.
